As more and more equipment comes into lab zones, look for energy-saving ways to take heat out of these zones with chilled water instead of expensively treated HVAC. Chilled beams are just now starting to be used in U.S. labs, and for certain lab types active (not passive) chilled beams used in combination with heat recovery wheels promise a very high energy-use reduction. To solve condensation problems on chilled beams, run the chilled water feet at a higher temperature. For research data focused computer and server rooms, the size and heat loads are growing exponentially. For one institution it went from 1,000 sf in a building, to 3,000 sf in their latest building, and to 8,000 sf with water cooling for their next building.
