With regard to LEED™ certification for academic science buildings, schools report they are making the application of LEED™ principles an integrated and serious part of their capital project process. But the opinion is that actually going through the certification process is an unwarranted cost and a detractor from well rationalized and developed capital planning policies. It was also pointed out that many LEED™-type activities, such as promoting campus wide use of public transport to cut vehicle trips, don't get LEED™ points where a particular building project is concerned. However, energy use is the big "green" sustainable that has an identifiable bottom-line impact.
