The atrium - a key to collaboration.

Bringing diverse science groups together is a common science building planning theme, and how you do that should constitute a major planning activity. Almost no interdisciplinary science building is being built without an atrium. The trick is to have a real plan for using that atrium productively with respect to the science program. When planning, don’t put an open kitchen near public spaces (like atriums) – it is a problem of cleanliness, orderliness, and neatness.
