Core facilities are driving building designs. They impact the locations of labs, offices, stairways, and hallways. Plan new buildings with this idea in mind. An often overlooked planning fact is that core facilities are expensive and inflexible. Don’t let the laboratory planning effort (the part this is becoming ever more flexible) distract you from putting a lot of planning effort into your core facility elements.
