Multiple campuses, missions, and academic disciplines pose serious barriers to creating an integrated academic health center. To overcome these barriers, three things are required: a highly visible sign of institutional commitment to the integrated model, enthused and committed stakeholders, and a comprehensive strategy for the physical infrastructure. Marilyn Lanier and Mark Williams detail here key OHSU initiatives and best practices to align stakeholder agendas and interests, manage local community involvement, and forge a strategic investment plan for facility infrastructure, IT linkages, space governance, and changes in pedagogy for its vision for the future.
