The roadmap from stand-alone hospital to a mission-based, integrated research center involves new planning and financial models for space utilization, capital, and operating costs. Stanley Stark and Warren Hendrickson draw on integrated hospital/research facilities and programs at Johns Hopkins, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the University of Wisconsin to illustrate new planning models for physicians and research staff, connected or embedded research facilities, the flow of people traffic, and the interaction of professional staff. They detail major process changes required in project planning and contracting, and they deliver a matrix of new planning metrics.
