A significant new development in medical education is the emergence of a host of totally new medical schools that are building their programs on innovative models of teaching and a focus on meeting specialized community health needs. In their analysis of plans and programs for such new launches as Florida State, UC-Merced, Washington University, SUNY Downstate, University of Alberta, and The Commonwealth Medical College, Jim Berge and Dr. Robert D'Alessandri profile new AMHSC models that are challenging the thinking of legacy medical schools with respect to institutional models, linkages, accreditation, teaching methodologies, and funding.
