 Research Facilities 2009
Program Overview

The 29th Annual Research Facilities Conference!

This is the essential meeting for research program leaders, facility group leaders, capital planners, and project directors who link up annually to benchmark plans and programs, monitor the successes of others, and shape actionable new plans for their institutions.

The research infrastructure and planning model has changed. Leading research program and infrastructure groups from all sectors are executing aggressive new plans focused on competitive advantage, more program diversity and change, higher asset utilization, bottom-line cost savings, and economic growth.

Now is the time for action, and this conference is the time and place to recalibrate, and get the new thinking, tools, and decision-making rationales behind those plans.

Specifically, you’ll see how eight big new decision-shaping developments will change what you do with what you have and what you build.

1. Newly tested ideas with breakthrough results. The “new ideas” for research facilities of three years ago have now been tested for what works and what doesn’t. Plan your projects around what’s working for:
• Energy-use reduction
• Flexibility
• Interdisciplinary features
• Visibility

2. No more cookie-cutter lab solutions. Plan for a wide variety of research-program themes and a complex mix of wet, dry, micro-level, instrument-intensive, engineering, testing, and scale-up operations.

3. Multi-purpose buildings. Even though buildings may be funded for targeted missions, what will go on inside will be a sophisticated, changing menu of programs. Plan for it.

4. More research per square foot – high space utilization. New space planning standards and space management processes are being applied to the changing reality of research programs, and they are yielding new space-saving models. Recalibrate your occupancy plans around these new standards and processes.

5. Making better use of existing buildings – no more abandonment of old research buildings. More research-to-research building upgrades will be done as part of bigger-picture research-program thinking and campus planning. Plan for it.

6. Energy use, sustainability, and low carbon footprint are the new, permanent, heavyweight “players” at the table. Plan for it – but with proven technologies, not untested ideas.

7. New business spin-offs and regional economic development are now big factors in the research program calculation. Bottom-line, research is an engine for economic growth – jobs, cash flow, and wealth creation. Plan for it with the right space, scale-up capacity, and officing for new business startups.

8. The cost of building or renovating facilities will be very different for the next 24 months than what you’re used to. Recalibrate your plans accordingly with the latest research facility construction cost forecast.
