Biocontainment laboratories demand precise risk-based planning for design and operation. Imperial College London is designing and procuring a BSL3-E/BSL-4Ag Avian Influenza facility for installation by necessity in a hospital adjacent to one of London’s busiest train stations. The hospital also houses a swimming pool used by a local school. Anton de Paiva examines the extremely detailed risk assessments for these projects. He identifies the critical details that ensure the safety of those inside and outside the labs. He describes rigorous UK validation and certification processes and the public education efforts necessary for this project. Session Leader:- Anton de Paiva, PhD , Biological Safety Officer - Imperial College London
