Critical project planning, construction, and equipment details can make or break the success of biocontainment labs inside highly technical facilities. Nancy Boyd and Fred Khoshbin document NIAID’s project experience as a financier and participant in the development and construction of 15 biocontainment facilities built during the past five years. They also define the best practices for engaging the community to ensure successful project completion and opening. Finally, Nancy and Fred examine how evolving biosafety and biosecurity requirements are influencing project decisions and facility design.
