BSL-3 research is frequently complicated by the need to shoehorn biocontainment labs into existing infrastructure and adjacencies not originally designed for high-level containment. Mike Dennis describes the flexible containment system that was fitted into an existing multi-function building and the functionality achieved within the limitations imposed by the existing building envelope. He details how the same system is being integrated into a new building for containment across a range of species and how the Health Protection Agency (UK) achieved species flexibility in a retrofitted BSL-3 space.
