General Session: Building academic science infrastructure for the changing national demographic

Canada’s commitment to science growth coupled with the coming demographic changes for post-secondary facilities has both “knowns” and “unknowns.” Known: We are constructing new science buildings. Unknown: We don’t know what kind of science space will actually be needed – wet, dry, engineering, health, or the arts? Aidan Kiernan details UBC’s new Okanagan campus solution of 40,000 sm of lab space for unknown research and teaching programs, and unknown students, faculty, and researchers. He profiles the ultimate in generic planning, and he demonstrates facility criteria needed to “flex” for a broad spectrum of program requirements.

Session Leader:
  • Aidan E. Kiernan, P Eng, Associate Vice President, Operations - University of British Columbia, Okanagan
