BSL-3 labs rarely exist without some connection to ABSL-3 animal facilities. Are BSL-3 labs and animal facilities to be planned as separate facilities with their own operations, or can they be integrated into one operationally efficient BSL-3 facility? Here, session leaders do a pros and cons comparison of current case studies that illustrate both approaches. They examine SOPs, HVAC, logistics (movement of people, material and animals), operational efficiencies, equipment, space plans, and cost issues for segregated and integrated solutions, and they prescribe a methodology for making the right design decision.
