While national and international agencies are quickly ramping up research programs to get a grip on the pathogenesis of “bird flu” viruses and develop effective vaccines and therapeutics, there is still confusion as to what influenza-research lab design features need to be. In this session, Jon Crane draws on design concepts and lessons learned on influenza facilities at CDC, NIH, Pirbright, and other institutions to demonstrate special containment planning measures, engineering system requirements, and laboratory features. He also outlines how to get “bird flu” labs up and operating quickly.
