 Animal Research Facilities 2008
Program Overview

The 20th Annual Animal Research Facilities Conference!

This is the annual industry meeting for animal research leaders, facility managers, and capital planners to benchmark their plans and programs, and build on the latest successes and innovations.

PLUS you'll get the opportunity to tour H. Lee Moffitt's 29,000-gsf mouse house barrier facility and 340,000-gsf interdisciplinary research building.

Here are the performance targets the industry is currently focusing on and the solutions to achieve those targets that you'll learn at the conference:

Target #1 -- Higher operating efficiency, lower operating costs
You'll get the new animal facility operating models, facility features, and equipment selections that are raising operational efficiencies, increasing space utilization, and lowering total program operating costs.

Target #2 -- Successful capital projects (upgrades, renovations, and new construction)
Success means you get a facility that is occupied on schedule, operates to spec, and gets accredited – all for the right amount of dollar outlay. Here you’ll learn the details on how peers are making that happen and the “project killer” mistakes to avoid.

Target #3 -- Flexibility for future program changes
Here you’ll see plans for more efficient housing, and room and mechanical system configurations that can be easily adjusted for different types of programs and protocols.

Target #4 -- Energy-use reduction & a low carbon footprint
The “smart” integration of environmental measurement and control systems with modern air handling equipment can take a big chunk out of animal facility energy bills, however, thinking is now going beyond just utility bills and adding sustainability issues (energy, water, materials, space, transport) to animal facility operations. Learn here where the new facility plans are headed in this area.

Target #5 -- Secure biocontainment and biosafety programs: ABSL3 & BSL3-Ag
For many, this has proven to be a real problem in construction, space-upgrades, commissioning, and facility operations. Here you’ll get the principles, processes, innovative ideas, and metrics for successful, cost-effective BSL3, BSL3-Enhanced , and BSL4 facility initiatives involving animals.

Target #6 -- Wise vs. unwise value engineering decisions
The right question is, “Are we willing to operate this facility without this feature?” Here you’ll learn which features are being scrutinized, and what the verdicts are.

Target #7 -- Solutions for waste handling, complex logistics, worker health and safety
New initiatives are employing calculated, economical solutions for waste treatment, efficient process flow, and safe, attractive work environments. You’ll get the details here.

Target #8 -- Integrated room-rack-MEP technologies & innovations
More innovative equipment and technology solutions to choose from, and new thinking about efficient room sizes and MEP configurations -- it all has to work together or you’ll be spending big money without getting the operating and financial benefits. Learn here how new technologies are being integrated with space and MEP decision-making for the best outcomes

I strongly encourage you and your team to engage with these issues at this meeting.

Hope to see you in St. Petersburg, Florida.
