The integrity of animal care and use programs is determined largely by the quality of the animal facilities. The financial cost of the animal research program is also dependent on animal facilities, whether they are centralized or decentralized, and whether animal facility upgrades, renovation and new construction is coordinated to ensure operational efficiencies. Michele Bailey will detail Cornell University’s decision, and the outcome, to consolidate many small, individual facilities into several sophisticated, centralized core facilities. She sets out the debate and decision-making rationales, the effects on research, staffing, operating costs, oversight and quality of animal care.
