Forum M: From BSL2 & BSL3 to BSL3-Enhanced: What's needed for a successful upgrade?

Whatever it costs to build and operate a facility for BSL2 and BSL3 operations, BSL3-Enhanced costs more -- more to build and more to operate. But how much more? Here session leaders profile the Medical College of Wisconsin's initiative to turn BSL2&3 spaces into BSL3-Enhanced capacity. They detail specific step-ups in airlocks, security, liquid waste decontamination, environmental protection (supply and exhaust air), and SOPs. They also set out details of the upgraded operating cost model and project-economizing contributions solicited from subcontractors with suggestions for innovative design and construction details.

This session has been approved for AIA continuing education credit and qualifies for HSW units.

Leaders:

  • William Lefebvre -- Senior Project Executive, Gilbane Building Company
  • Richard R. Hombsch, PE -- Principal, HGA Architects & Engineers
  • James L. Hopp, PE -- Director, Department of Facilities, Medical College of Wisconsin

Schedule:
