Forum D: Construction (and renovation) strategies for low operating costs, flexibility, and research reliability

The thesis of this session is that you should be modeling your animal facility and operating model after the major contract research organizations where low operating cost, flexibility, and research reliability are the keys to mission performance. Session leaders use the example of Covance's new Arizona facility to detail three big ideas: 1) process mapping that yields efficient labor operations and space utilization even with frequent changes in animal models, 2) new methods for saving big on construction costs, and 3) new design options and standards for achieving lower facility operating and maintenance costs.

This session qualifies for AIA/CES units, including HSW and Sustainable Design credit.

Leaders:

  • Michael P. Vascellaro, AIA, NCARB -- Vice President, Reynolds, Smith & Hills, Inc.
  • Joseph A. Limpert, PE -- Principal In Charge/Laboratory Planner, Affiliated Engineers, Inc.
  • Camilo Garcia -- Project Manager, DPR Construction, Inc.
  • Deb Pirkel -- Process Excellence, Nonclinical Safety Assessment, Covance Laboratories, Inc.

Schedule:
Monday, October 19: 11:10 AM - 12:05 PM
