2004 International Conference on Biocontainment Facilities
Program Overview

Much has been learned in just the past year about cost-effective facility strategies for biocontainment – especially with respect to the new biosecurity criteria, worker safety, construction details, facility flexibility, building systems, and operating costs.  The purpose of this conference is to get those findings “on the table” and illustrate how they can be applied economically and quickly to meet rapidly expanding program missions, and more stringent operating and performance certification criteria.

In particular, this conference details best solutions for the top biocontainment planning, design, construction, and operating challenges identified in Tradeline’s Survey of  2004 Biocontainment Priorities.   This includes:

• Implementing new biosecurity and safety mandates,
• Making decisions on biocontainment mechanical systems and waste handling,
• Imbedding individual biocontainment spaces within overall research building contexts,
• Planning buildings that have a large BSL-rated component,
• Upgrading space to higher-level BSL-usage,
• Creating BSL-rated space that is adaptable for different missions,
• Addressing specific biocontainment applications, such as vivaria, agricultural research, and vaccine development and production.

This is THE conference on the planning, design, construction, operation, and biosecurity details for biocontainment facilities.   It addresses all biocontainment levels and all project types ranging from new construction to retrofits, and from total buildings to lab wings and isolated containment suites.

Don’t build, or even plan, without the necessary information this conference will give you.

Make this meeting an integral part of your 2004-2005 management plan by bringing your scientists who will use these facilities and the key operations people who will have the responsibility of running what you build.

I look forward to seeing you in St. Petersburg!
