Certificate of Occupancy

Published February 2000

A document issued by a governmental authority certifying that all or a designated portion of a building complies with the provisions of applicable statutes and regulations, permitting occupancy for its designated use. When renovation of a facility—or part of a facility—begins, the structure or the part being renovated loses its certificate of occupancy.
