Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer
membranes. This single-ply roofing material is formed by mixing EPDM
polymer (a sticky black substance) with oils and carbon black, as well
as a number of other materials. EPDM membranes have good
weatherability, elasticity, ultraviolet resistance and flexibility at
low temperatures. One disadvantage of EPDM is that the field-fabricated
seams formed by applying contact cement to lapped sheets are vulnerable
to poor workmanship and are not as strong as the membrane. Lapped seam
failures are the most common type of EPDM membrane failure.
