A means of transmitting data and
communications in which light transmitted through thin glass fibers is
intensity modulated by data signals. The use of fiber optics
significantly reduces the large volume of wire or conductors (coaxial
and twisted pair) normally used. The fiber optics method of
transmitting information significantly increases transmission capacity
and, correspondingly, reduces the size of communications conductors.
Fiber optics requires the use of special source drivers and modems.
Terminations and connections tend to be costly because fiber ends
require special polishing.
