Flanking

Published February 2000

Sound that travels from one point to another by other than a direct path. Sound may be reflected, transmitted by structural means or leaked. Like ripples in a still pond, sound waves proceed from the original source to the nearest hard surface and then reflect in a different direction. When considered in this light, the "overlap" problem of flanking provides insight into the fluid, three-dimensional nature of acoustics.
