The theoretical average amount of light falling on a surface, as derived by averaging the illumination falling on all points of the surface. Two systems may produce identical average foot candles while providing highly dissimilar illumination.
Horizontal: Foot candles perpendicular to a horizontal surface, such as a street. All horizontal foot candles are in the same plane for the same surface. They can be added together arithmetically when more than one source provides light to the same surface.
Initial: Foot candles (minimum, maximum or average) produced when lamps and luminaries are new.
Maintained: Foot candles (minimum, maximum or average) calculated through application of a light loss factor.
Minimum: The amount of light falling on the point of a surface with the least illumination.
