Free Address Offices
Published February 2000
A non-territorial office plan.
A Japanese corporation, Shimizu Corp., found that the maximum occupancy
rate in their R&D offices at any one time was 75 percent, with an
average occupancy of 51 percent. This space was replanned so that only
secretaries have designated desks, because they occupy them full-time.
Each research worker is given a personal radio phone, a mobile lockable
three-drawer pedestal and a personal laptop computer. Enough chairs and
tables are provided to accommodate a 75 percent occupancy rate and are
all located on a "first come, first served" basis. All archival and
reference materials are stored centrally. The extra 25 percent space is
used for group meeting areas.
