As applied to computer room air conditioning units, when the outside air temperature falls below a certain level, the units turn off the mechanical refrigeration system and reject computer-generated heat to the atmosphere using an antifreeze solution, pumps and coils. The system is "free" because it does not use fan energy for the fluid coolers of the compressor in the units.
