In precision processing environments, refers to the procedures for entering and exiting clean or sterile areas. These procedures typically involve disrobing, "gowning-up" with protective and sterile clothing--masks, cloaks, gloves, hoods and foot coverings--then "gowning-down" for garment removal and disposal. Also the donning of sterile surgical garb.
