The large and noisy central heating and cooling facilities for R&D labs must be adequately sound isolated with sufficient construction to block the noise. Designers should allow enough space for the installation and maintenance of noise and vibration devices. For cleanrooms, the required large air handling systems are usually located close to the labs to minimize costs. Because the systems continually operate at high horsepower, the sound attenuating treatments must also have low-flow resistance to avoid excessive energy consumption.
