A process used in biotechnology in which living cells are put inside "roller bottles" along with the nutrients that support them. The cells grow on the inside surface of the bottle, which are gently turned from time to time so that all the cells receive nourishment. As they mature, the cells begin to produce the substance that is the crude product, which is then removed and purified.
