Senior Engineer, Electrical YALE UNIVERSITY Location: New Haven, CT Description:
Position Description: Provide electrical engineering support to all facilities organizations including ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and adequacy of the University’s primary electrical power distribution system (13.8KV, 4160V, 480V) serving the Central, Science, and Medical School campuses.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will: serve as the in-house electrical engineer for all facility and electrical distribution matters working closely with Physical Plant and Utilities Department personnel. Serve as the primary contact for consultants and the local electric distribution company for all technical issues pertaining to the electrical distribution systems. Solve problems in unstructured situations, develop engineering solution, and expedite projects. Review drawing and specifications prepared by outside consultants for compliance to NEC, OHSA regulations, maintainability, University design standards, good engineering, and trade practice. Perform acceptance inspections. Create and maintain Master Plan for Electrical Distribution System, documenting current and anticipated demand and energy usage in support of the expected growth for the next 20 years. Originate electrical system expansion and improvement projects in support of building renovation and new construction. Identify and analyze electrical distribution system problems. Develop scope of investigations. Write requests for proposals (RFPs) and oversee consultant activity. Review electrical metering data to ensure accuracy and reliability of the meters. Based on metering data, execute projects to reduce system losses and consumption campus wide. Create and maintain University electrical design standards for all construction and renovation projects. Develop and maintain the capital maintenance plan for the campus Electrical Distribution System. Provide engineering expertise to other University departments including Construction and Renovations and Occupational Environmental Health and Safety.
Qualifications: a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 10 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered professional engineer. Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering theory, practices, and principles. Thorough knowledge of building codes and regulations and construction standards. Knowledge of accounting practices and principles. Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, drafting, computer and computer-aided design (CAD), managerial, and supervisory skills.
