Penn State is currently seeking a Senior Project Manager Building Planning and Operations who will be responsible for the planning, construction, coordination and subsequent infrastructure research/management of a new +300,000 gsf materials and life sciences building and the high caliber equipment and infrastructure within. We are looking for expertise in laboratory facility planning, building design and construction, and organizational experience; strong familiarity with cleanroom technologies and infrastructure needs; and highly innovative and strong problem solving skill set. This position will report through the Materials Research Institute and will work closely with counterpart Project Manger in the Office of Physical Plant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Develop a plan for critical laboratory adjacencies and space requirements for core and faculty laboratories.
Evaluate and document existing instruments and infrastructure requirements in fabrication and characterization core facilities; thin film deposition, electrical characterization, photonics, biophotonics, chemical and polymer synthesis, magnetic resonance imaging, life sciences, including environmental health and safety (EHS)
Interface with staff/users/vendors of cleanroom fabrication facility including infrastructure, equipment and ongoing operations to minimize costs and maximize value for users
Manage and review the progress and quality of the construction documents developed by outside architects and engineers.
Act as a liaison between project architects, consultants, and building committees and faculty/staff members during design completion, construction and start-up.
Complete formal monthly project reports for each project that summarizes the status of the project including safety, cost, and schedule status. These reports will also identify status vs. goals, key issues and planned resolution.
Resolve project-related technical, budget, and schedule conflicts between consultants, construction management firms, and sub-contractors so that the projects meet or exceed all project goals/commitments.
Interface with equipment vendors from purchase to installation.
Manage all aspects of post construction facilities oversight
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Bachelor’s or Master's degree (preferred) in Engineering/Sciences
5-7 years related experience in the professional practice
Experience with scheduling, word processing, spreadsheet, and CADD programs.
Preferred: Professional registration or equivalent
Preferred: Experience with institutional administration, construction programs, and project management responsibility.
SKILLS & ABILIITES
Knowledge of architectural design practice and principles and development of contract documents.
Preferred: construction management experience for large-scale, complex projects.
Ability to establish priorities and follow through on projects playing close attention to detail with minimal supervision.
Ability to complete assignments under time constraints.
Knowledge of capital and strategic planning and life cycle cost analysis.
Knowledge of accounting practices and principles.
Highly developed oral and written communication, presentation, organizational, estimating, analytical, supervisory, and leadership skills.
Advanced skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Project
Ability to work within a project team structure and be a team player.
