The Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) is the animal resource center that supports all biomedical research activities at Northwestern. The CCM acts as the service and teaching unit for animal use in research, testing and education and is responsible for the care and provision of animals at CCM facilities on both campuses as well as in various academic departments.
DIRECDTOR OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS (Center for Comparative Medicine - Northwestern University)
We seek an experienced laboratory management professional with a strong financial focus to provide business and managerial oversight for day-to-day operations of the CCM's Business Operations office and staff. This individual will provide budget & strategic financial management, allocate human resources & project future staffing needs to ensure CCM facilities function at optimum effectiveness, and develop/implement policies to ensure Northwestern meets all regulatory requirements.
In addition, this individual will be expected to develop business process improvement measures to maximize laboratory animal care services; oversee the coordination of procurement, receiving and census to ensure timely billing of research grants; ensure management information systems for CCM are functioning to support the unit's IT needs; represent CCM to university committees and external agencies to address concerns regarding administration of animal care & compliance of federal, state & local laws; and participates in vendor negotiations to ensure cost-efficiency.
Requirements include: • MBA, MPA, MPH, MS or Accounting degree (or equivalent combination of education, training & relevant work experience) • Min. 5 years experience (10 years preferred) as Business or Operations Manager, Manager or Administrator at a laboratory animal care facility, university or pharmaceutical company • Advanced knowledge of regulatory & compliance requirements related to animal care/use in research • 10 years of people management in a complex/matrixed environment, including providing policy guidance for recruitment and retention • Effective decision-making, problem-solving and conflict management abilities • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring and staff development • Ability to work with small animals in a research setting • Demonstrated personal ethics and integrity • Ability to travel between the Chicago & Evanston campuses • Must be available on some weekends and after normal working hours
Preferred skills: • Experience in Financial Management • Experience in Strategic Planning • Experience in Change Management • Negotiation skills
