Columbia University Primary Goals for the Assistant Director of Space Planning
1. Translating contemplated activities into quantified space programs
and solving space allocation problems
Reporting to the Diretor of Space Planning, the Assistant Director is
primarily tasked with designing and executing space management plans
that faculty and staff require in order to advance the University's
programmatic goals. This entails working closely with the University
Architect, Provost, Deans, Faculty Committees, senior administrators,
and other stakeholders to solve intricate space allocation problems. The
design and allocation processes entail determining the amount and type
of space required, matching these requirements with space that is or
could be made available, and creating the program specifications that
will be used to guide the design, construction, and budgeting processes.
Because of the limited amount of available space, this responsibility
requires ingenuity and skill in envisioning workable space configurations
to meet the essential needs of users, given the financial, schedule, and
construction realities.
2. Negotiations and partnership with clients
The Assistant Director is tasked with working closely with diverse and
demanding clients to understand and negotiate the full scope of their
requests. Frequently, clients' requirements for space exceed what is
possible given the numerous constraints. The Assistant Director will
need exceptional listening, interviewing, negotiation, creative thinking,
and problem-solving skills to understand clients' requests, the
problem(s) they wish to solve, and the broader context of their projects
in order to develop and guide clients to realistic yet satisfactory
solutions. As "honest broker," the Assistant Director must work with the
aim of the advancing the University's strategic goals while designing
tactical, logical solutions.
3. Conceptualizing strategies for space procurement
The Assistant Director will partner with clients to conceptualize strategies
for space procurement that both suit the requirements of the project and
are acceptable to the University senior administration.
