Genentech, Inc. Job Description - VP, Business Services
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Legal, HR, Business Services
and Compliance, the VP, Business Services will lead Genentech's
Strategic Facilities Planning, Security, Business Continuity and
Environmental Health and Safety functions. These functions are vital to
our continued success and touch every organization at Genentech. The
leader must interact with executives across the company, the industry
and related government agencies to ensure the programs are meeting
the current and future needs of the company. Along with their team, he/
she will set a multi-year strategy and will ultimately be accountable for
the success of their programs and projects. The successful individual will
develop and lead efforts in these functions and across the company to
ensure Genentech is well positioned for the future.
Strategic Facilities Planning is charged with providing the leadership,
strategic vision, tactical execution and business acumen to support the
diverse facilities planning needs throughout the Company. The Security
Services Group works to promote a safe and secure work environment
for company employees, vendors and visitors. The Security function is
also responsible for emergency response, the vast array of
transportation services and the building receptionists. Business
Continuity maintains an efficient and sustainable state of readiness to
enable Genentech to respond to an interruption of services in such a
manner that business functions continue. EH&S ensures compliance with
relevant industry standards and best practices for protecting workers,
the environment, and facilities.
Headcount for the combined organization totals approximately 120.
Requirements:
- 15+ years experience in Facilities Management, Security, Facilities
Planning, EH&S or Corporate Engineering (experience in multiple
functions is preferred)
- Previous BioTech/Pharma experience preferred
Key competencies include - good judgment, collaboration and teamwork,
strategic agility, decision making, building and leading teams.
The successful individual must possess a high degree of proven
leadership, management, interpersonal, negotiation, and communication
skills.
Education:
Bachelors degree in Business, Engineering, Architecture or another
related area is required. Masters degree is strongly preferred.

Genentech, Inc. Sr. Director Strategic Facilities Planning
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Legal, HR, Strategic Facilities,
Security and Compliance, the Sr. Director of Strategic Facilities Planning
is charged with providing the leadership, strategic vision, tactical
execution and business acumen to support the diverse facilities planning
needs throughout Genentech.
The current facilities portfolio includes over 4.5M sq. ft. of owned and
leased property in South San Francisco, 1.5M sq. ft. at two other
California manufacturing sites, two additional manufacturing sites
beginning construction and 12 field offices, supporting nearly 13,000
employees and contractors globally. The projected capital spend is
forecasted at ~$500M annually.
This position is responsible for leading the Strategic Facilities Planning
Department which consists of 4 groups; Facilities Planning, Site Planning,
Corporate Real Estate and Business Operations. The Facilities Planning
group is responsible identifying, scoping and prioritizing both new and
renovation project needs for each customer group; the Site Team
develops and maintains master plan and capacity studies for each of the
GNE campuses; the Real Estate Team manages the invest and divest
transactions for owned and leased property and property management
of tenant occupied facilities; the Business Operation Team provides
support and process improvement services for the department.
This position will lead a department which is currently is made up of 20
regular employees and 8 contractors. Direct reports include 2 Director/
AD positions.
Job Requirements:
12 + years experience in facilities planning with increasing levels of
responsibility, including a senior position in facilities planning in an
industry environment. Bachelors degree is required, a major in
Engineering or Architecture is preferred. Masters degree is also
preferred. In-house industry experience and specific biotech or pharma
industry experience is preferred. Architectural/engineering expertise and
corporate real estate background are required. High degree of proven
leadership, management, interpersonal, negotiation, and communication
skills. Must have demonstrated strategic ability as well as the capability
to drive for results, innovate and manage large and complex projects.
