GSA Renovates Switzer Memorial Building

WASHINGTON -

The General Services Administration's National Capital Region has selected architectural/engineering firm HNTB to design the $81.7-million renovation of the Mary E. Switzer Memorial Building in Washington. The complete modernization of the 590,000-sf office facility will include new HVAC; automatic sprinklers; new telecommunications systems; security modifications; a new emergency generator and power distribution system; and asbestos abatement. The Department of Education currently occupies 60% of the building, with the Department of Health and Human Services and the International Board of Broadcasters occupying the remainder. The design phase is slated for completion in summer 2004, with construction to begin in 2005, pending funding approval. Completion of the first phase is expected in early 2007, with the second phase ending in mid-2008.
