The University of Sasketchewan Develops Saskatoon Campus

The University of Saskatchewan is initiating projects totaling between $460-million and $490-million on its Saskatoon campus. The $250-million Academic Health Sciences Center is currently in the design phase with construction to begin in 2007 and reach completion in 2010-2012. The seven-story facility will house an animal research facility and a BSL-2 laboratory. A second building will house a new school of public health, a library, meeting rooms, and a 500-seat lecture theater.

InterVac, the $110-million International Vaccine Center, will be the province's first BSL-3 laboratory for studying animal and human diseases and vaccine testing and treatment. Construction will begin in 2007 and reach completion in 2009-2010.

The $57-million Western College of Veterinary Medicine will be expanded and renovated to include a two-story addition to the teaching hospital, a research animal housing facility, additional laboratories, and an upgraded diagnostic services area. Construction is ongoing and is slated to reach completion in March 2008, with the facility opening between 2008 and 2009.

The $17-million Synchrotron biomedical imaging and therapy facility will house laboratory space and two beamlines for radiation therapy research and imaging. It will include large animal imaging and handling capabilities, and will utilized high-energy X-rays for the treatment of cancer and other conditions. Construction began in 2005. Completion of the facility is slated for January 2007 with the construction on the beamlines reaching completion in 2008.
