College of the Atlantic will begin construction in spring of 2019 on the $13 million Center for Human Ecology in Bar Harbor, Maine. Designed by GO Logic and Susan T. Rodriguez to accommodate the school's unique interdisciplinary curriculum, the two-story, 29,000-sf building will provide science labs, flexible lecture halls, faculty offices, art and design studios, and a teaching greenhouse. Creating a new front door and academic hub for the campus, the project will support a pedagogy of experiential learning integrating research, mentoring, and social interaction. Designed to meet Passivhaus energy performance standards, the collaborative facility will feature a high-performance building envelope and a glass façade offering abundant natural light. The general contractor for the project is E. L. Shea and completion is expected by September of 2020. A second phase of construction, totaling approximately 16,000 sf, will include an experimental theater, an art gallery, a propagation greenhouse, and an admissions center.
