University of Virginia Health System broke ground on the 150,000-sf Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center in Charlottesville on April 12, 2008. The $74 million, five-story comprehensive cancer center is slated for completion in mid-2011. The technology-rich outpatient facility will include space for clinical trials in a sustainably-designed facility featuring natural lighting and garden spaces. The center will be built to accommodate advances in areas such as genetic diagnosis and analysis, informatics, and molecular biology. The facility will be organized so that all disciplines and services can easily be brought to the patient to provide individualized care that is both sophisticated and tightly integrated. UVA is also planning to construct a 72-bed, eight-story tower connected to the existing University Hospital and a 40-bed acute care hospital in the next four years.
