Children's Hospital San Diego has selected McCarthy Building Companies to perform pre-construction services for its new 279,000-sf Acute Care Pavilion in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. The $260-million Acute Care Pavilion is designed to house a surgical center, neonatal intensive care center, cancer center, conference centers, and 84 beds. The pavilion is planned for a 148,650-sf site at the southeast end of the Children's Hospital campus adjacent to the existing Rose Pavilion. A bridge would connect the existing facility to a new four-story building, the design of which includes 16 operating rooms with associated support departments, a 28-bed neo-natal intensive care unit, and 84 acuity adaptable medical-surgical beds.

The project team includes architect Anshen+Allen of San Francisco; structural engineer KPFF of San Francisco; civil engineer RBF of San Diego; electrical engineer Randall Lamb of San Diego; and mechanical engineer Shadpour Consulting Engineers of San Diego. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall of 2007 and reach completion in spring of 2010. McCarthy is also performing design-build services for an adjacent 332,279-sf parking structure that will accommodate 1,051 vehicles on five levels.

The pavilion was partially funded by a $60-million gift from Ernest Rady; the hospital will be renamed Rady Children's Hospital. The total project cost of the facility is estimated at $350 million with $260 million construction cost.
