University of Albany and Toyko Electron Construct TEL Albany R&D Facility

ALBANY, N.Y. -
The University of Albany and Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) are planning to site a $300-million chip R&D facility at the University's Nanotech complex, comprised of NanoFab I and NanoFab II. TEL and its partners will invest $200-million in the center, with the state of New York contributing over the next seven years $100-million in capital construction, equipment and specialized tools for research. Slated to open sometime in the spring 2003, the TEL Albany R&D Facility will be the Japanese computer-chip tools manufacturer's only R&D facility outside of Japan. Ground was broken on the $200-million, 220,000-sf NanoFab II in November. The facility, known as the Albany Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics, will also be the home of the $403-million research center of International Sematech North, an Austin, Texas-based consortium of 12 computer chip makers.
