Kansas State University’s 113,000-sf Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI) in Manhattan, Kansas will provide training in biocontainment operations and maintenance in a March 2008 session. As part of the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program, the session will support the Midwest Regional Center for Excellence, which is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. This is the first time the training curriculum will be hosted at the $54 million BRI, which can accommodate research and training in molecular biology, veterinary medicine, plant pathology, entomology, and food safety in one location. The BRI opened in 2006 and is comprised of approximately 38,000-sf of research laboratories, 10,000-sf of education and training space, 10,000-sf of office, and support space for the facility’s sophisticated air handling, electrical, waste disposal, and security systems.
