Wayne State University has completed the $20-million renovation of the Gordon Scott Hall of Basic Sciences in Detroit, Mich. As the building is the main facility for the School of Medicine's teaching, research, and administrative functions, the project included the renovation of approximately 40,000 sf of space on the building's third floor, converting it to a research laboratory, specialized lab support, and office and classroom spaces for the Center for Molecular Medicine & Genetics and the Department of Pharmacology. Electrical upgrades were also made throughout the nine-story building.

The facility features four large, open, flexible lab zones to foster interaction and collaboration. Separate isolated areas adjacent to the labs house specialized research support equipment such as fume hoods, autoclaves, and freezers. Lord, Aeck & Sargent's Ann Arbor, Mich., office was the architect of record, with L.S. Brinker Company of Detroit as general contractor; Peter Basso Associates of Troy, Mich., as MEP/FP engineer; and Robert Darvas Associates of Ann Arbor as structural engineer.
