University of Nebraska Medical Center Breaks Ground on Second Research Tower

OMAHA, NEB. -

The University of Nebraska Medical Center broke ground on a $74-million research tower on its Omaha campus on August 8, 2006. Known as the Research Center of Excellence II (RCEII), the 10-level. 252,179-gsf facility is nearly identical to the Durham Research Tower and will house 98 state-of-the-art laboratories, lab support, and investigator offices. The two research towers will be connected with a covered parkway. The new facility will house multidisciplinary research on cancer, biosecurity, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, developmental biology, genetics and molecular genetics, neurobiology, and organ transplantation biology.

The majority of the 98 laboratories will accommodate research for the College of Medicine, the Eppley Cancer Center, the College of Pharmacy, the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, and the University of Nebraska Center for Biosecurity.  Funding of $12 million for the tower will come from the state's bioterrorism and homeland security funds, and the center will house several labs for improved testing of chemical and biological warfare agents. Completion is slated for late 2008.

The architect for this second research tower is HDR Inc. and the laboratory design consultant is Research Facilities Design.
