Charles R. Drew University Constructs Nursing School and Research Clinic

Charles R. Drew University has selected Irvine-based gkkworks as the general contractor for a $30 million medical education and research facility in South Los Angeles. The two-story, 65,000-sf structure will house a nursing school, a research clinic, and life science laboratories. Construction of the scientific research facility is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and conclude in September 2009. It will include state-of-the-art space for laboratory, clinical research, and support functions for the College of Medicine and the College of Science and Health, while the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing represents the first comprehensive nursing school to be built in California in decades and the first ever for South Los Angeles. The project team also includes the Culver City, Calif., office of architect HOK and construction manager S.L. Leonard and Associates of Camarillo, Calif. The facility will be developed with an accelerated design, approval, and construction schedule, proceeding from schematic design through permitting within seven months and to occupancy within 16 months thereafter.
