The University of Florida opened the 280,000-sf Cancer & Genetics Research Complex in Gainesville in late fall of 2006. The $84.5 million facility contains a five-story research wing of the UF Shands Cancer Center and a six-story Genetics Institute wing. The building also houses the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research and a forensic anthropology lab, the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory. Designed by Hunton Brady Architects of Orlando with Ellenzweig Associates Architects of Boston as lab planners, the facility encourages collaboration and interaction among researchers. Design work began in June 2002, construction commenced in December 2003, and initial occupancy began in June of 2006. The University of Florida is also engaged in planning three buildings dedicated to research in biomedical sciences, emerging pathogens, and nanotechnology.
