BROOKLYN, N.Y. -

Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn has begun construction of its new 120,000-sf, 7-story addition. Construction manager for the $66-million modernization project is the New York Division of Skanska USA Building. The project, being undertaken on behalf of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, commenced in January 2002. The project involves the modernization and consolidation of the hospital's Ambulatory Care, which has already been turned over to the hospital, and the Cardiac Cath Lab Facilities, which is also currently under construction and scheduled for completion later this summer.

The new steel-framed addition will include 212 medical/surgical beds and other support facilities including a first floor Pediatric Ambulatory Care Facility; the second, third and fourth floors will include medical/surgical beds; the next two floors will contain critical care units, and the top floor will contain post partum/nursery.

The full project budget is $88-million, all inclusive. Construction is scheduled for completion in early 2005. The architect for the project is The Hillier Group of Princeton, N.J.
