The University of Houston will complete the $76-million Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex in spring of 2006. Designed by Cesar Pelli, the facility will enable collaboration between researchers from the Cullen College of Engineering and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The complex will accommodate research in biotechnology, nano-lithography, DNA chips, protein chips, materials, optoelectronics, synthetic medicinal chemistry, and drug design.

Featuring 40 open-plan laboratories on five floors, the 200,000-sf complex will also include a two story, 32,360-sf classroom wing with a 250-seat classroom, two 180-seat classrooms, two 100-seat classrooms, and six smaller classrooms; some of the instructional spaces will be equipped for distance learning. A 6,910-sf, two-story oval lecture auditorium will be able to seat 550 people.
