Ohlone College Nears Completion of Health Sciences Campus

NEWARK, CALIF. -

Ohlone College will complete the Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology in December of 2007. The 135,000-sf project is sited on 80 acres in Newark, Calif., a new campus in addition to the college's main Fremont location. The facility will accommodate 3,500 students in the fields of biotechnology, healthcare, and environmental technology as well as programs in nursing, physical therapy, and renewable energy.

The construction cost of the project will be $57 million with a total project cost including land, consulting fees, legal, construction, and furniture of $118 million. Aiming to attain a LEED Platinum certification, the Newark Center incorporates sustainable design features such as an enthalpy wheel, a geothermal system with 26 miles of underground piping, and 38,000 sf of solar panels. The cost of incorporating sustainable design is estimated at two to three percent of the construction budget. The project team includes architectural firm Perkins & Will and contractor Turner Construction.
