AUSTIN, MINN. - The Hormel Institute, an independent research unit of the University of Minnesota, broke ground in August 2006 on a $20-million expansion of its Austin, Minn., facilities. The project includes construction of a new three-story building housing research laboratories and a vivarium and the complete renovation of an existing facility to house offices, research support, a media center, and a new library. The expansion will accommodate research on the use of food compounds to treat and prevent cancer. The project was funded by a $10-million grant from the Hormel Foundation and additional funding from Hormel Foods Corp.
