St. Joseph Hospital Completes Patient Care Center

ORANGE, CALIF. -

St. Joseph Hospital has completed construction of its Patient Care Center in Orange, Calif. Adding 248,000 sf to the existing hospital campus, the $203 million project was built by general contractor McCarthy of Newport Beach. The facility is part of a master plan that includes the refurbishment of the original hospital as well as a new cancer center that McCarthy is currently building. The Patient Care Center is comprised of a new entrance and lobby, 150 inpatient beds, 14 operating rooms, a new central sterile and supply suite, and a 13,000-square-foot free standing remote central plant. Each patient floor features a central hub for computer systems, and free WiFi is provided for guests in the hospital lobby.

The facility was built with a steel braced frame designed for Zone 4 seismic considerations and “I” occupancy, as mandated by California’s Senate Bill 1953, which requires strict new seismic regulations for all acute care facilities. Constructed between the existing St. Joseph Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), the tower incorporates an underground connection to both facilities at the basement level. Designed by NBBJ of Seattle, the center incorporates sustainable design elements such as exterior lighting that reduces outdoor light pollution; energy efficient Solarban 80 windows; recycled aluminum curtainwall; Lutron lighting controls with special sensors; low emitting flooring and carpets; PVC free wainscoting in janitor’s closets, utility rooms and clean sterile rooms; and an energy efficient roofing system.
